Youth Services

If you're a young person living in Somerset then being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or questioning your sexuality can be difficult. You might live in the middle of nowhere or you might not know any other young LGBT people. Somerset Gay Health are trying to help solve this situation by offering a  number of youth services that give support and advice for all young LGBT people in Somerset, these include befriendings, college groups and 2BU evening groups and a free counselling service called Voice

Befriending service

Before you attend a youth group you can take advantage of our befriending service where our youth worker, Matt, will come out and visit you anywhere in Somerset in a place you feel comfortable like a coffee shop. There he can talk through any issues or concerns and answer any questions you might have about the youth groups, other services or any other problems in your life.

College LGBT groups

Our youth worker visits many schools and colleges throughout Somerset to help run, organise and support LGBT groups. It is a great way to meet other fellow students who are going through the same sort of issues and help support each other and make new friends along the way. Feel free to contact Matt to find out if your school or college has a LGBT group or if you’d like to set one up.

2BU evening groups

We realise the pressures young people face on the scene, particularly with regard to sex, image, drugs and alcohol, and how the 2BU youth groups were an antidote to that, a place where you can be ‘themselves as themselves’ without substance use or the pressure to look and behave a particular way.

There are 2BU groups accross Somerset, They normally run fortnightly and last for 2hrs. We aim to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered young people, where they can find non-judgmental information and advice on a range of issues relating to their sexuality.

This includes an opportunity for mutual support with other young people who are LGBT or unsure of their sexuality - which helps foster a positive self-image and build self-esteem.  If you wish to attend or find out more information about any of the groups please contact our youth worker, Matt. If you decide you would like to attend, he will  normally arrange to meet up for a coffee in a place you feel safe where we will discuss what the group is like and talk over any concerns you might have.

The groups are open to under 20 year olds. No matter where in Somerset you are we will try and arrange some transport to your nearest group. Locations are kept secure for your safety. If you are not 'out' to anyone, the groups have arrangements to make sure it stays that way
